Hiragana and katakana chart, and flashcards.

A printable hiragana and katakana chart, and flashcards with English meanings. No sign-up and no app: open the page on a computer or phone and use it to share your screen in an online lesson, on a classroom screen, or for practice on your own.

The hiragana flashcards: rows to choose on the left, and the kana う large on a card
What makes the flashcards different

Read real words with only the kana you know

Choose the rows you have learned, and the cards show words made only from those kana. With the あ and か rows, that is 16 words, like あい, かお, えき and こえ. Add the さ row and there are 25; by the た row, 35. Kana that haven't been taught yet never appear, so every round ends with words students can read.

あ・か16 words
+ さ25 words
+ た35 words
All rows117 words
The Words mode: the あ and か rows are selected, and the card shows the word かお

Katakana has 121 words, like テレビ, コーヒー and ホテル. In whatever order you add the rows, the words use only the kana covered so far.

Flashcards

Letters shows one kana at a time; Words shows short words. Tap a card to flip it and see the romaji (and, for words, the English meaning).

Keep teaching grammar while students learn kana

If students must learn every kana before any grammar, the first few lessons are only about letters. N5 Course slides show furigana and romaji with all the Japanese, and the romaji can be switched off. Students say full sentences from the first lesson while they learn kana alongside.

N5 Course is a complete beginner Japanese course for 1:1 tutors: 44 lessons, about a year of weekly classes, with slides, homework and quizzes with answer keys, and vocabulary sheets. The first five lessons are free to open, no sign-up.

Launch price: US$99, one payment, until December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027: US$199.
